How to Set Goals and Achieve Them

Goal setting is a fundamental component in striving for and achieving success.

Whatever your hopes and aspirations are for both the short and long term setting attainable goals is the tool that will bridge the gap between where you are now and where you want to be in the future.

You will find that when you clearly define what you are striving for and how you are going to get there you are more likely to find the motivation to make the necessary changes.

Whether you want to lead a healthier lifestyle, sharpen your intellect, or start a hobby or a business,  you can get results when you streamline your focus.

Let’s start by looking at some of the benefits of goal setting.

1. Goals Streamline Your Focus

Structured goals give you a clear direction with regards to the necessary changes that you must make in order to achieve your ambitions. There is a strategy that many life coaches use to help their clients in this area called S.M.A.R.T goals. This is how it works:

Specific – Be as descriptive as you can when setting a goal because the more detail you put into a chosen goal the more likely you are to reach it.

Measurable – Be sure to have a measurable goal so that you know how you are progressing.

Attainable – Is this goal realistic? It is absolutely fine to push the boundaries and shoot for the stars as long as you feel it’s achievable.

Relevant – Determine the significance behind each goal. When a goal is purpose-driven it is easier to find the motivation to accomplish it.

Timely – Set out a specified timeframe to accomplish each goal. It is perfectly okay to be flexible and practical. The main objective is to make progress.

2. Increase Your Motivation

Setting goals is a great way to kick-start you into action, boosting your motivation levels.

There is something quite invigorating about embarking on a new challenge, especially when there is a significant intention behind the goal.

If, however, you find it difficult to get motivated there are some things that you can do to get yourself into a positive mindset. 

Research shows that you can cultivate optimism by writing a gratitude list, and by improving your posture by sitting and standing up straight.

Some other effective methods include challenging negative thoughts and visualizing yourself achieving your goal.

Although, if you experience any setbacks, try not to be disheartened. The most important thing is that you stick with your life-enhancing goal.

3. A Measurable Way of Achieving an Accomplishment

Striving toward a well-defined objective will give you a sense of accomplishment because you will know when you arrive at your designated destination. 

This is the beauty of measuring how you will know when you attain a goal.

Goal-directed intentions can provide you with a framework for everything that you want to accomplish in a specified timeframe.

A clear list of goals should help to stop you from feeling overwhelmed, giving you a greater feeling of control over your life. 

5. Live With Purpose and Intention

Living with purpose and intention starts when you sit back and take stock of all the things that are important to you.

What gives your life purpose?

How can you live a meaningful life?

The goals that you choose to prioritize will answer these questions, and enable you to live a life that is true to who you are.

How to Set Goals

Start by brainstorming your ideas.

Allow yourself ten minutes to list anything that you would like to achieve, have or experience over the next twenty years.

Write down as many goals as possible it doesn’t matter how big or small.

Once have done this, your next task is to go through your list and write how many years you think it will take to achieve each goal.

Then narrow your focus by choosing the four goals that are achievable in a twelve-month timeframe.

Finally, evaluate your goals.

Are they clearly defined and measurable?

Are you setting yourself goals that are attainable with the right focus?

If not, look at how can you can make them more specific and measurable. 

How to Achieve Your Goals

Setting goals is one task and achieving them is another thing entirely because there are several factors that govern the outcome of an intention.

However, you can increase your likelihood of success by focusing on what you need to do to attain your chosen objectives.

Here are four tips to increase the success factor.

Visualize Success

The mind is a powerful tool and when we utilize it for our own good the reward can be magnificent.

So for this technique start by visualizing yourself achieving your goal.

Next, imagine how you look, feel, and act when this is happening.

Make this image as vivid as you can while experiencing the positive emotions associated with attaining your goal.

Then think of all the possible obstacles that could prevent you from attaining your goal.

Consider how you will overcome these obstacles. This part is called mental contrasting. It is also significant because you are considering the very things that could prevent you from achieving your desired outcome.

Be sure to do this visualization activity regularly so that you align your values and purpose with your actions.

Share Your Goals

Research shows that when you share your goals with all of your family and friends you are more likely to lose the motivation to put in the work.

This is because your brain experiences the same rewards from talking about achieving your goals as it would if you actually accomplish them.

This is why you should be selective about who you tell.

Research from Ohio State University shows that you are more likely to follow through with a goal when you tell someone whose opinion you respect.

This way you are held accountable and it’s more likely to motivate you into taking action.

See Your Objectives

One of the most effective ways to focus on your goals is to literally write them down on pieces of paper and stick them where you will see them.

Put them somewhere near your bed so that they are the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night.

You could put them near your computer, on the fridge, or in any other place that gets your attention.

This will help you to stay focused.

Review Your goals Regularly

It’s always a good idea to get into the habit of reviewing your goals.

This will help you to track your progress and establish what is working and what isn’t. By staying flexible you can then make any necessary alterations to enhance your goal plan. 

Constructive goal setting is the first step toward living your best life.

Putting your goal plan into action will help you to realize both your potential and your dreams.
